ROBIS Ship ballast tank inspection system

Clients/End users : TOTAL, ENGIE Partners: Naval Group (CITEPH program)

Objectives

Development of an ROV dedicated to ship ballast tank inspection without emptying. The main benefit offered by ROBIS is the possibility to carry out complete inspection (visual check, laser scaling, wall thickness and cathodic protection potential measurement) with a lightweight system, extremely maneuverable thanks to its vectorized thrusters, and able to access confined areas through standard manholes (500mm). Using such system avoids mobilizing operators in confined areas for inspection purpose, thus lightening security procedures, logistic means and inspection costs.

Design features

The main challenge was to design a compact and lightweight system able to embed all the required sensors for inspection operations and simple enough to reuse most components  of Subsea Tech’s mini-ROVs Observer and Guardian (thrusters, motor controller, electronics, etc.).

Our skills

  • Complex mechanical design
  • Electronics
  • NDT sensors integration
